6 Essential Car Fluids to Check Regularly 🛠️

Your car is a complex machine with many moving parts and one of the keys to keeping it running smoothly is to ensure that all the essential fluids are at the right levels.

Regularly checking these fluids,  can help prevent costly breakdowns and keep you safe on the road. Here are six essential car fluids,  you should check regularly:

1. Engine Oil 🛢️

Engine oil is the lifeblood of your car’s engine. It lubricates the moving parts reduces friction and helps dissipate heat. To check your engine oil follow these steps:

  • Park your car on a level surface and turn off the engine.
  • Wait a few minutes for the oil to settle.
  • Locate the oil dipstick usually marked with a bright colored handle.
  • Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, and then pull it out again.
  • Check the oil level on the dipstick. It should fall between the “min” and “max” marks.
  • If it is below the “min” mark you need to add oil.

Remember, to use the recommended type and viscosity of oil for your vehicle as specified in your owner’s manual.

2. Transmission Fluid 🚗

  • Some vehicles have a dipstick for transmission fluid similar to the engine oil dipstick.
  • Follow the same procedure as for engine oil to check, the level and condition of the transmission fluid.
  • However some newer cars may not have a dipstick for transmission fluid.
  • Transmission fluid, is essential for the proper functioning of your car transmission system.
  • It lubricates gears cools the transmission and facilitates smooth gear shifts. To check your transmission fluid:

3. Coolant Antifreeze 🌡️

Coolant, also referred to as antifreeze, plays a critical role in regulating your engine’s temperature.

It serves the dual purpose of preventing your engine from overheating during hot summer months and safeguarding it from freezing during the colder winter season.

To perform a check of your coolant level, follow these steps:

  • Ensure that your engine has cooled down before attempting to open the radiator or coolant reservoir cap.
  • Most contemporary vehicles come equipped with a transparent coolant reservoir that includes clear markings denoting the minimum and maximum fluid levels. Examine the coolant level against these designated marks and add more coolant as necessary.
  • Keep in mind the importance of maintaining a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water, unless your specific vehicle’s guidelines dictate otherwise.

4. Brake Fluid 🛢️

Brake fluid is crucial, for your car’s braking system. It transfers the force from your foot on the brake pedal to the brake calipers, allowing your car to stop. To check your brake fluid:

  • Locate the brake fluid reservoir, typically near the firewall on the driver’s side of the engine compartment.
  • Check the fluid level against the “min” and “max” markings on the reservoir.
  • Ensure the brake fluid, is clear or slightly amber in color. If it is dark or contaminated, it is time for a brake fluid flush.
  • Brake fluid is hygroscopic meaning it absorbs moisture over time reducing its effectiveness. Regular checks help maintain your brakes’ performance and safety.

5. Power Steering Fluid 🔄

Power steering fluid assists in making it easier to turn the steering wheel, providing better control over your vehicle. To check your power steering fluid:

  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir which is usually labeled.
  • Check the fluid level against the markings on the reservoir.
  • Ensure the fluid is clear or slightly translucent if it is dark or cloudy it may need to be replaced.
  • Low power steering fluid can result in difficulty steering especially at low speeds.

6. Windshield Washer Fluid 🌬️

While not as critical as the other fluids windshield washer fluid is essential for maintaining visibility while driving. Dirty or streaked windshields can be hazardous. To check your washer fluid:

  • Open the washer fluid reservoir usually located under the hood.
  • Ensure there is enough washer fluid to keep your windshield clean.
  • Regularly topping, up your washer fluid ensures you have clear visibility especially during inclement weather.

In addition to checking these fluids it is essential to follow your vehicle’s recommended maintenance schedule for fluid changes and flushes.

Keeping these essential car fluids in good condition will help prolong the life of your vehicle and keep you safe on the road.

If you are unsure about how to check or change any of these fluids consult your owner’s manual or a qualified mechanic for guidance.
