Honda and Acura join the Tesla charging club! The two car brands will now use Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for their upcoming electric vehicles sold in the USA.
The Honda and Acura electric crossovers are coming in 2024 and they’ll be built by General Motors. But there’s a catch – they might not use the latest and greatest connector, called NACS. That’s something the car industry is still figuring out. We’ll have to wait and see if Honda and Acura push for NACS or not.
GM recently announced that they will be adopting the NACS connector for their electric vehicles starting in 2025, which could extend to Honda and Acura models built by GM.
The stylish ZDX is expected to feature this connector by 2025 or 2026, requiring an adapter for those currently using the CCS1 connector. This move means that Honda and Acura drivers will have seamless access to Tesla’s charging network, significantly increasing their options.
Tesla’s fast-charging stations make up around 60% of all fast-chargers in the U.S, with other automakers such as Ford, Mercedes-Benz, and Nissan already making deals to use Tesla’s chargers.
Additionally, these companies are also planning to adopt the NACS connector for their models in the U.S, with other automakers like Hyundai and Volkswagen considering doing the same.
Honda and Acura also have plans to introduce their own EV platforms, including potentially for a new NSX supercar. However, it remains uncertain whether vehicles based on these platforms will come with the NACS connector as standard.
